Stone wall repair & rebuild in Philadelphia.

Free-standing garden walls, stone façades, retaining walls — stone wall repair, partial rebuilds, and full reconstructions when the wall is past saving. Pennsylvania bluestone, Wissahickon schist, and field-stone work by the family concrete contractor since 1997.

What we offer

Stone wall repair & rebuild across Philadelphia.

Stone walls fail when the joints fail or when stones move. Stone pointing fixes the joints; stone wall repair handles everything else — the leaning section, the bowed wall, the stones that have shifted, fallen, or been hit by something. We re-set what’s salvageable and rebuild what isn’t, matched to the existing stone so the repair vanishes into the wall.

01

Free-standing garden walls

Decorative garden walls that have started leaning, bowing, or losing stones. We disassemble the failed section, rebuild the base, and re-lay the stones to the original line and height.

02

Stone retaining wall repair

Existing stone retaining walls that are losing the grade behind them — bulging, leaning forward, dropping stones. Repair, partial rebuild, or in some cases conversion to a more durable retaining wall system.

03

Damaged section rebuild

A car backed into the wall. A tree fell on it. A section blew out from frost heave. We assess what stones we can save, source matching stones to fill in for the lost ones, and rebuild that section to read as part of the original wall.

04

Re-set displaced stones

Individual stones that have shifted, dropped, or been pushed out of the wall face. Lift the stone, clean the bed, re-set with proper mortar bed and a tooled joint to match the rest of the wall.

05

Cap stone repair & replacement

Cap stones at the top of a wall take the worst weather. When they crack, slip, or fall, we re-set or replace with matched stone. Cap-only repair is one of the most common stone wall repair calls we get.

06

Full stone wall rebuild

When the wall is past repair — failed footing, structural failure, or so much movement that the existing stones won’t re-line up — full disassembly and rebuild. We reuse the original stones; replacement stone fills in for the lost ones.

Wall repair details

Stone wall repair vs. stone wall rebuild.

Most stone walls don’t need full rebuilds — they need targeted stone wall repair. The trick is reading which one your wall actually needs. Bowing or leaning isn’t always structural; some pretty serious-looking stone wall failures are just a re-pointing job.

01

Diagnose the failure first

Failed mortar joints? Stone pointing. Stones moved but wall geometry intact? Stone wall repair. Whole sections moved or footing failed? Stone wall rebuild. We assess on site — and the diagnosis decides the scope.

02

Save the original stones

Original stone, especially historic Pennsylvania bluestone or Wissahickon schist, is irreplaceable on cost and visual match. We disassemble carefully, label, and re-set the original stones — not just pour new concrete and forget the wall ever was stone.

03

Match new to old

When stones are missing or destroyed, we source replacement stone matched to the original — type, color, weathering pattern. The new section blends, doesn’t shout. Most stone wall rebuild work fails this match; we don’t.

04

Address the cause

A stone wall doesn’t fail without reason. Drainage problem? Frost heave? Tree root push? We address the cause as part of the stone wall repair so the same failure doesn’t come back next year.

Why Marcello

Stone wall repair done like the original mason did it.

Local stone & old-Philly experience.

Pennsylvania bluestone, Wissahickon schist, brownstone, field stone — we’ve worked every common Philly wall material. We know which stones need re-set vs. which need replacement.

Salvage the original stones.

Most cheap stone wall rebuild jobs throw the original stones in a dumpster and replace with whatever the supplier had. We carefully disassemble, label, and reuse — the original stone is half the visual character of an old Philly wall.

Honest repair vs. rebuild call.

A wall that looks scary doesn’t always need a full stone wall rebuild. We’ll tell you straight whether targeted stone wall repair holds, or whether it’s past saving. Wrong call wastes money in either direction.

Owner-done, owner-finished.

Marcello and his father are on most jobs themselves. The hands that diagnose your wall are the hands that fix it. Stone work is craft — we treat it that way.

FAQ

Stone wall repair questions, answered.

What’s the difference between stone pointing and stone wall repair?

Stone pointing fixes failed mortar joints between stones. Stone wall repair fixes the wall when the stones themselves have moved — leaning section, bowed wall, dropped stones, full collapse. Different jobs, different scopes. We do both.

Most walls need pointing every 50–100 years. Wall repair is needed when something more structural goes wrong.

My garden wall is leaning. Is that a stone wall rebuild?

Maybe, maybe not. A wall that’s leaning slightly may just need a re-point with the joints raked and re-set, plus a footing check. A wall that’s leaning visibly more than a few inches off plumb usually needs partial or full stone wall rebuild — the geometry has gone past what mortar alone will hold.

We assess on site. The honest answer often saves a customer thousands.

Can you match the existing stone if some need replacing?

Yes — we source replacement stone matched to the original wall’s material, color, and weathering pattern. Pennsylvania bluestone, Wissahickon schist, common field stone, and brownstone are all locally available. Match isn’t always perfect, but it reads as part of the wall, not a patch.

How long does a stone wall repair take?

Targeted stone wall repair (one section, a handful of stones, cap stones): 1–3 days. Larger sections or full stone wall rebuild: 1–2 weeks. Stone work is slower than concrete pour work because each stone has to be re-set individually — rushing it is what makes a wall rebuild fail.

Will the wall last after the repair?

If the cause of the failure is addressed, yes — stone walls have lasted hundreds of years when built and maintained properly. If we just re-set the stones without addressing the underlying drainage, frost-heave, or root-push problem that caused the failure, the same wall fails again in a few seasons.

We address the cause as part of every stone wall repair we do.

How much does stone wall repair or rebuild cost?

Highly variable — depends on the wall’s height, length, the scope (repair vs. partial vs. full rebuild), the stone material, and access. We don’t publish per-foot prices because the variability is too high for a flat number to be honest.

Free on-site assessment, written quote with a single number, scope clearly defined.
